Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease in 2 Plasma Product Recipients, United Kingdom

The work of Urwin reports the first two cases of Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in UK in patients with bleeding diathesis (one with hemophila  B and one with von Willebrand disease) treated for long periods with plasma products; in both cases the clinical suspicion of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease was confirmed by biochemical and histopathologic findings. However, the link between the treatment with plasma products and the occurrence of the disease cannot be established with certainty and thus these two cases must be regarded as occasional findings within the frame of a systematic surveillance program.
